When decorating a room, the last thing people consider (if ever) are the window treatments. I know, I know - window coverings are expensive! But, chances are good you have some windows and that means - you need them my friends. Windows are a part of just about every room and require just as much attention as the rest of the room. When you decorate, don't forget to give your windows some love.
So, how do you know what window treatment is right for you? Here are some things you need to ask yourself when selecting blinds.
How much privacy do I need from my window blind?
Sure, during the day, windows let in the light, but at night, those same windows reveal all our activities. Or perhaps your home backs on to a busy park where literally everyone and their dog looks directly into your dining room while you're sitting down for a meal. Not fun. Unless you like that, and in that case - carry on!
So, what do you do? You need blinds or curtains to provide you with privacy and keep those peepers out.
Some window shades come with both a sheer fabric and opaque fabric to allow you to control the light and the view through. Hunter Douglas has some great options such as the Silhouette and Luminette. During the day, you can have the shade open to maximize the daylight or you can have the shade closed with the vanes open which provides you with privacy from outside and allows you to see out as well. Also with the Silhouette , the gentle s-curve of the vane bounces light further into the room providing a nice diffused light.
What functions do I need from my window blinds?
Sure, window treatments accent the room. The fabric, texture, colour and material of your shades add another layer of interest while controlling light and providing privacy. With home automation, motorized blinds can be operated remotely through your tablet or smart phone or connect with your smart home system. But there are other functions that you should consider. Some window coverings provide thermal properties to keep your home cooler in the summer and minimize heat loss in the winter. Think of the Duette honeycomb shade by Hunter Douglas. In winter they can provide up to a 40% reduction in heat loss through your windows. In summer, they can do the opposite and reduce unwanted heat by up to 80%. Talk about energy efficiency!
How much light control do you need from your window blind?
If you have a room with south facing windows and you plan on setting up your home theater there and binge watching Netflix on your days off. You are going to need something a bit more robust than a sheer fabric to keep the glare down to a minimum. Roller blinds are great but Hunter Douglas has other great choices as well - such as the Solera pictured below. It comes with room darkening fabrics as well as top-down bottom up opening as an option so you can adjust where the blind is in the window to get the glare off your screen.
Window treatments are meant to compliment your decor but also work hard to perform a number of duties. Don't leave them out of the equation, plan for them early on in your project to make sure you get the window coverings that you need.
