Does your master bathroom lack the storage you need and the style you crave?
For years, bathrooms all around Calgary were designed with puzzling layouts. Soaker bathtubs with a separate shower were suddenly all the rage and the corner tub became a very common place item. Oh and - make up desks were also put into every corner you could find. Now, this doesn’t seem terrible at all. Very practical, and it’s nice to have more of a spa like feel in your ensuite - right?. The problem - typically the shower ended up being very small, usually with a basic fiberglass base and surround and the bathtub overpowered the bathroom.
Well, I’m walking you through a newly completed bathroom renovation project in Calgary and giving you 3 steps on how to plan your perfect bathroom renovation.
Plan your bathroom renovation in 3 easy steps.
Now, let’s take a little look at what we were dealing with before the renovation…..
For this bathroom renovation project, all of the above applied. The bathroom underwent a complete renovation and the new space is a true reflection of the clients personal tastes as well as a much more function space that will accommodate them for many years to come.
So, how do you get started?
Step #1 - consider the layout of the space for your master bathroom renovation
Does the layout of your bathroom actually work for you or could a few changes turn it into the bathroom of your dreams?
Most people can’t see past the current layout of a space so sometimes a new set of eyes might be needed. Really consider what your priorities are. Plumbing can typically be moved without too much difficulty. If you’re planning a renovation, you should get exactly what you want right?
With this master bathroom renovation, the layout was altered to allow for a generous custom tile shower by moving it into the former vanity space. The area with the make-up desk (which the client probably never sat at once) was then able to accommodate a vanity with double sinks, a must for most people.
Once the layout is finilized, you can move on to the next step in your journey
Step #2 - start selecting the fixtures for your bathroom renovation
This seems like a no-brainer but the fixtures need to be selected early on in your project to ensure they arrive in time as well as to ensure the plumbing electrical and mechanical are all rough-ed in properly according to the fixtures.
Got the fixtures selected for your renovations? Now you can move on to the next step.
Step #3 - select the finishes for your bathroom
is this where you would have preferred to start? - well, you’re not alone.
The finishes you select for your bathroom are pretty important. This is not a room you will likely renovate again for many years, if ever. So you need to really consider what you want now, but also what has the best potential for longevity. You also want to consider cleanability and maintenance - because nobody likes a high maintenance bathroom.
The clients were looking for low maintenance tile with as minimal grout lines as possible. And a smooth gloss surface in the shower for easy cleanup. They also have no plans to renovate the rest of their house so it was important that the finishes flowed with the home.
Once you’ve selected everything it’s time for the party to get started and the renovation can begin. By carefully planning all the details before you begin construction, your bathroom renovation will proceed much smoother and you won’t be rushed into making the wrong decision.
